Colored ceilings are an area where you can really make a design statement!
Not only are painted ceilings interesting but they are an inexpensive way to make a huge design declaration!

Here are a couple of tips to help you maximize your ceilings impact.
If you would like your space to feel intimate and cozy, consider a darker color than the walls. The darker color will bring down the ceiling and create a feeling of intimacy.
Light color options will help rooms feel airy, less restrictive and larger. One point to remember would be to keep the contrast low between the walls and ceiling to achieve that feeling of openness.
Paint sheen is really limitless. A word of caution to remember, the flatter the paint the less the imperfections of the surface will show. So if you choose a glossy or metallic and you want a smooth appearance, just prep your surface.
White ceilings can also be a brave choice.(Even though I would still encourage you to use a non traditional color!) So if white is what your heart desires do it! An example would be to paint tongue and groove ceilings white. The character will really be emphasized! Just remember that the white will reflect the color of the walls and may cast off a soft hue of them.
Monochrome ceilings can help a room look unified. This technique can make smaller rooms appear larger because the ceiling blends in and there is no contrast with the walls.
Patterns can follow the same color rules. If you want them to pop use contrast colors from the walls and softer colors for less emphasis.
