Set The Mood

When decorating your space it's important to decide on the mood you want to set and stick to it throughout your design. Each room is intended to evoke a feeling to match its setting and a "look" that goes with its intended use. Carry out the mood, or general look and feel you want a room to express, with the color schemes, materials and lighting you chose.

For example, if you live in a high-rise city apartment a typical mood for your living room would be sleek and modern. How do you achieve this mood? Keep your color schemes, furniture and furnishings sophisticated and minimal. Think urban.

In contrast, say you are decorating your cabin's living room in the country. Here you would typically want the mood to be warm, inviting and rustic. You would achieve this look with decor and color schemes that are traditional, casual and natural. Think warm colors and natural woods.

Most importantly, while you may want your mood to fit the feel of where you live be sure it also fits your own tastes and preferences. You want your space to express a mood you will feel comfortable with.
